Tech Golfers Drop Opening Match at Collegiate Match Play Championship, Second Round Suspended

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Georgia Tech golf team dropped its first round match at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship and was trailing in its consolation round match when play was suspended on Friday due to darkness. The 16-team event is being contest at Barefoot Resort’s par-72, 7,343-yard Dye Course in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The 11th-seeded Yellow Jackets opened the day against sixth seeded TCU and dropped a 3.5-1.5 decision in the morning match. Freshman Thomas Jordan was Tech’s lone winner of the day, as he downed the Horned Frogs’ David Schultz by a score of 1-up. The Jackets’ other half point came from senior Troy Matteson, as he halved his match with TCU’s Adam Rubinson.

In the afternoon, Tech squared off with 14th-seeded Tulsa in the consolation bracket. The Golden Hurricane held at least a 1-up lead in all four ongoing matches, with Chris Noel having already defeated Yellow Jacket freshman Michael Barbosa by an 8 and 7 score, when play was suspended at 5:07 p.m. All of the remaining matches will conclude on Saturday with a 7:45 a.m. start. The third round will follow the conclusion of the second round in both the championship and consolation draws.

The Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship will conclude on Sunday with the championship matches of both draws. Full tournament results and live scoring of the event are available at www.golfstatlive.com.
