Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Guillermo Gomez and Eliot Potvin earned singles victories but it was not enough as the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team (11-9, 1-6 ACC) dropped a 5-2 decision to Wake Forest (15-6, 6-1) Sunday afternoon at the University Indoor Tennis Center on the Wake Forest campus.

“Wake played very well today,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “There was some bad weather and we had to play inside. We had a chance to win the doubles point but we were unable to capitalize when we needed too. That set the tone for the singles matches. Guillermo and Eliot played well to pick up two singles victories for us.”

The Yellow Jacket duo of Scott Blackmon and Ryan Smith opened the day with an 8-3 loss to No. 14 Steven Forman and Cory Parr. Tech came right back when Gomez and George Gvelesiani defeated Carlos Salmon and Andrew Brasseaux, 8-3 but Wake Forest was able to pick up the doubles point after Jason Morgenstern and Mariusz Adamski beat Miguel Muguruza and Potvin, 8-6, in the third doubles position.

With a 1-0 lead, the Demon Deacons earned four straight wins at No. 2, 5, 6 and 3 singles to take the match. No. 59 Cory Parr earned the win at No. 2 singles when No. 65 David North had to retired after falling behind 3-1. Morgenstern defeated Smith, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5 singles and Brasseaux outplayed Gvelesiani, 6-3, 6-1, at the sixth spot in the lineup. Finally, Adamski worked his way past Blackmon, 6-3. 7-5.

The Jackets Potvin picked up the first win of the day for Tech when he defeated Jonathan Wolff, 6-2, 7-6, at No. 4 singles. No. 72 Gomez earned his 13th dual match singles victory of the season and third over an opponent ranked in the top 100 when he beat No. 82 Forman, 7-6, 4-6, 10-8.

Tech returns to Atlanta next weekend as it competes in its final two home matches of the season. The Jackets will welcome Boston College on Friday, April 4 at 2:30 p.m. and Maryland on Sunday, April 6 at 2 p.m. to the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
