Georgia Tech’s duo of Marko Rajevac and David North opened play in the NCAA Doubles Championship with a straight set victory over 34th-ranked Zach Ganger and Miron Mann of Utah, 6-3, 6-4, Thursday at College Station, Texas.
The Yellow Jacket pair, ranked 38th nationally, are the first Georgia Tech doubles team to advance in the NCAA Championships since 1994.
Rajevac, a junior, and North, a freshman, improved their record to 15-8 on the season. They will face the Tulane duo of Dmitriy Koch and Alberto Sottocorno in the Round of 16, scheduled for Friday afternoon 3 p.m. ET at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M. No Tech doubles team has advanced further than the Round of 16 since 1966.
In the NCAA Singles Championship, Tech sophomore Jose Muguruza was eliminated in the round of 32 as he fell to fourth-seeded Catalin Gard of Mississippi, 6-4, 6-2, in a match that was twice delayed by rain. Muguruza, ranked 22nd, finishes the season with a record of 28-14.
