Tech Concludes Clemson Invitational

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams finished the Clemson Indoor Invitational this afternoon at the new Clemson Indoor Track and Field facility. Junior Shanta Smith (Miami, Fla.) led the Yellow Jackets with a second-place finish in the triple jump (43’4.50″) and a third-place finish in the 300 meters (39.34). Sophomore All-American Chaunte Howard (Riverside, Calif.) tied the school record in the high jump with a mark of 6’02.25″ and senior Michael Massey (Asheboro, N.C.) captured the men’s high jump with a clear of 7’00.25″.

Senior sprinter Amandi Rhett (Willingboro, N.J.) rounded out the first-place finishers for the Jackets in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.55. Rhett also competed in the finals of the 300 meters (40.16), ending in sixth place. Andriane Lapsley (San Antonio, Texas) finished third in the 60-meter dash (7.61) and ended the 60-meter hurdles (8.90) in sixth place.

Sophomore Brandy Depland (Katy, Texas) finished seventh for the Jackets in the triple jump with a mark of 39’09.75″.

Rounding out top 10 finishers for Tech was senior Spencer Irvine (Lake Forest, Ill.) and freshmen Ashlee Kidd (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Jennifer Sims (Woodstock, Ga.) and James Lemons II (Atlanta, Ga.).

Kidd finished in third place of the 500 meters with a time of 1:13.50 and teammate Sims posted a time of 2:17.61 in the 800 meters to finish fourth. Irvine recorded a mark of 48’08” in the triple jump to finish in fifth place, while Lemons had a mark of 46’11” to finish ninth in the triple jump.

Tech will return to action after the New Year at the Kentucky Indoor Invitational Jan. 16-17, 2004.
