TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Tyler Greene drove in three runs and Andrew Kown worked six strong innings to lead Georgia Tech (24-17, 6-5 ACC) to a 12-2 win over No. 12 Florida State (27-15, 6-5) on Saturday night at Dick Howser Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets second straight win over the Seminoles clinched the series. It marks the first time since the 1994 season and just the second time since FSU joined the league in 1992 that Tech has won a series in Tallahassee.
With the loss, the Seminoles lost a home ACC series for the first time since 1995 and for just the sixth time in 51 conference home series since joining the league.
Kown (6-1), who has won five straight decisions and has not lost since Feb. 29, worked six innings and held the Seminoles to one run on three hits. He issued four walks and struck out six, while allowing just three Florida State batters to advance past first base. The Tech bullpen of Philip Perry, Aaron Walker and John Goodman worked the final three innings and allowed one run.
Clifton Remole paced the Tech offense with a 3-for-4 performance, while Greene, Eric Patterson, and Steven Blackwood added two hits apiece. Eight of the nine Tech starters had at least one hit in the game.
Tech took advantage of FSU starter Mark Sauls’ wildness to build a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sauls issued two walks and hit a batter, while Brandon Boggs drove in two runs with a single, Tyler Greene had a RBI single and Remole added a sacrifice fly.
The Yellow Jackets scored six times in the fourth inning to push the lead to 10-0. Remole led off the inning with a double and scored on Mike Nickeas’ RBI double, and after a walk and sacrifice bunt, consecutive singles from Patterson and Greene accounted for three runs. Blackwood capped the inning with a two-run homer, his second of the year, over the 30-foot wall in right field.
The Seminoles broke up the shutout in the sixth inning when Stephen Drew tripled and scored on a wild pitch to make the score 10-1. Ryne Malone, who went 2-for-4, singled and scored on a double play groundout to make the score 10-2 in the seventh, but the Yellow Jackets added a pair of unearned runs in the top of the eighth to push the lead to 12-2.
Sauls (3-4) took the loss, allowing nine runs on seven hits and two walks in 3.1 innings.
