2018 TYR Pro Swim Series – Atlanta Results
2018 American Short Course Championships Results
THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets wrapped up competition in the water this week at both the TYR Pro Swim Series meet in Atlanta, Ga. and the American Short Course Championships in Austin, Texas by posting two NCAA B qualifying times and sending four individuals to the B finals on Saturday, March 3.
The swimming and diving team will send six divers to the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships next week, which will be held in Knoxville, Tenn. from March 5-7.
Women’s Highlights
A handful of underclassmen were in action for the Jackets at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Atlanta on Saturday, highlighted by Emily Ilgenfritz and Catriona MacGregor‘s B finals appearances.
Sophomore Tamir Gonen touched the wall in a time of 2:22.68 in the 200 LC meter fly prelims to start things off for the Jackets on Saturday morning, placing 22nd overall and claim a spot in the C finals.
The duo of Alexandra Nilsson (1:13.76) and Kristen Hepler (1:14.03) placed 18th and 21st, respectively, in the 100 LC meter breast prelims in the morning to both earn a spot in the C finals in the night session. In the C finals, Hepler (1:13.35) edged Nilsson (1:13.44) as the tandem touched the wall in second and third in the finals heat to place 18th and 19th overall.
In the 200 LC meter IM, MacGregor turned in a time of 2:22.93 in the prelims to finish 17th and secure a spot in the B finals, while sophomore Chloe Miller touched the wall in a time of 2:28.82 in the prelims session to place 42nd.
MacGregor finished second overall in the B finals heat to place 10th overall with her finals time of 2:19.74.
Ilgenfritz took ninth-place overall with a time of 4:17.15 in the 400 LC meter prelims in the morning to earn a spot in the B finals, while freshman Camille Long (4:28.12) and sophomore Lindsay Wallace (4:29.32) finished back-to-back in 27th and 28th to make the D finals.
In the B finals, Ilgenfritz placed third overall with a time of 4:15.20, almost two seconds faster than her prelims time from the morning session, to finish 11th overall for the event.
Men’s Highlights
Like the women, the men’s team had two Jackets make and compete in the B finals on Saturday night in Clay Hering and Colt Williamson at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Atlanta, while both Christian Ferraro and Rodrigo Correia posted NCAA B times at the 2018 American Short Course Championships in Austin, Texas.
The Yellow Jackets had a total of three swimmers in the first event of the day, as Hering (2:04.81), Brennan Day (2:07.00) and Austin Whalen (2:09.46) all swam in the 200 LC meter fly prelims.
Hering went on to knock more than two seconds off his prelims time of 2:04.81 with a finals time of 2:02.68 and earn the win in the B finals heat and place ninth overall for the 200 LC meter fly event. The C and D finals, which Day and Whalen made, respectively, did not race.
Day also took part in the 200 LC meter IM, touching the wall in a prelims time of 2:09.11 to finish 21st overall and secure a spot in the C finals, which also did not take place, while Whalen swam in the 400 LC meter free, posting a time of 4:13.74 in the prelims.
In the 100 LC meter back, a trio of Jackets in Williamson, Leon Warnakulasuriya and Austin Daniel suited up for the Jackets. Williamson led the charge with a 10th-place finish and a time of 57.01 in the prelims to secure himself a spot in the B finals, while Warnakulasuriya claimed a spot in the D finals with a prelims time of 1:00.17, good enough for 28th overall. Daniel posted a time of 1:06.04 in the prelims event.
Williamson recorded a time of 57.25 in the B finals, finishing fourth in the finals heat and 12th overall, while Warnakulasuriya won the D finals with a time of 59.61 to record a top 25 finish.
In Texas at the American Short Course Championships, Ferraro turned in an NCAA B time of 1:47.23 in the 200 IM time trial, which ranks fifth all-time in Tech history, while Correia touched the wall in an NCAA B cut time of 1:35.59 in the 200 free time trial, a season-best mark for the junior co-captain.
