A veteran coach who enjoyed great success at the high school and college levels across the Southeast for three decades, Bill Stewart is in his second season at Georgia Tech. He served as a senior defensive analyst in 2023 before being named defensive assistant coach (linebackers) in 2024.
Stewart came to The Flats from nearby North Gwinnett H.S., where he compiled a 60-19 (.759) record in six seasons as head coach. He led North Gwinnett to the Georgia 7A state championship in 2017 – the first football state title in school history – and four region championships. He led all six of his NGHS teams to at least the second round of the state playoffs. He has also served as head coach at Etowah H.S. in nearby Woodstock, Ga. and James Clemens H.S. in Madison, Ala., and has totaled more than 100 victories in 14 seasons as a head coach.
He began his coaching career as linebackers coach at his alma mater, UCF, from 1993-95. The Knights had three-straight winning seasons in his three seasons as an assistant coach and earned an NCAA Division I-AA playoff berth in 1994.
In all, Stewart’s coaching experience includes one state championship, 15 region championships, 27 state playoff berths and a Division I-AA playoff appearance. At the high school level, he has coached more than 75 players that have gone on to play college football and three that have signed contracts in the National Football League.
Stewart graduated from UCF in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He also holds a master’s degree in health science from Alabama. He and his wife, Nichole, have a son, Jake, and two daughters, Kendall and Emma.

Prior to his six seasons at North Gwinnett, Stewart also served as head coach at Etowah H.S. in nearby Woodstock, Ga. (2006-11) and James Clemens H.S. in Madison, Ala. (2012-13). Etowah won three region championships under his leadership, giving him seven region titles in 12 seasons as a head coach in the state of Georgia. He has totaled more than 100 victories in his 14 overall seasons as a head coach.
His coaching resume also includes experience as defensive coordinator at Apopka (Fla.) H.S. (1995-97), Armwood (Fla.) H.S. (1998-2002), Parkview H.S. (2003-05) and Mill Creek H.S. (2014-16).

Stewart played linebacker at UCF from 1986-90, where he helped lead the Knights to the NCAA Division II semifinals in 1987 and the Division I-AA semifinals in 1990. He was named the Orlando Touchdown Club Defensive Player of the Year in 1990.
He went on to play three seasons professionally for the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League. He was a two-time all-Arena selection as a fullback/linebacker and helped lead the Predators to two Arena Bowl appearances and an AFL semifinal in his three seasons with the team.
