March 25, 2013
Date: Monday, March 25
Practice: No. 1 (of 14)
Dress: Shorts/sweats and helmets
Summary: Georgia Tech’s first spring practice of 2013 was under cold and windy conditions – the type of day that made many thankful for the John and Mary Brock Indoor Practice Facility. The Yellow Jackets shook the rust off with a two-hour practice, split between Rose Bowl Field and the Brock Indoor Facility.
Tech is without a number of key players this spring, all sitting out with injuries or recovering from surgery, most notably senior safety Isaiah Johnson, sophomore linebacker Jabari Hunt-Days, senior center Jay Finch and junior A-back Tony Zenon, among others.
Practice notes: Monday’s practice was the first official session for defensive coordinator Ted Roof and defensive line coach Mike Pelton… Roof is working specifically with the defensive backs, along with assistant Joe Speed… four quarterbacks worked under center on Monday – sophomores Vad Lee and Tim Byerly, redshirt freshman Justin Thomas and Marietta walk-on Holland Frost… former quarterback Synjyn Days worked exclusively Monday with the A-backs… true freshman Donovan Wilson, who enrolled at Tech in January, is the only scholarship true freshman in camp.
Position battle: While Finch is sitting out with shoulder surgery, junior Catlin Alford and redshirt freshman Freddie Burden are getting the snaps in practice this spring. “Catlin running with the (first team) and Freddie with the (second team). They’ll get a ton of reps this spring, which is good,” head coach Paul Johnson said.
Back in the huddle: With the news of Brian Bohannon’s hiring at Kennesaw State, Paul Johnson is even more actively involved coaching the quarterbacks this spring. “Coaching the quarterbacks today was fun… I enjoyed it.”
