Softball Avoids Sweep; Beats VT, 7-3

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Georgia Tech softball (11-25, 4-8 ACC) used 11 hits to score seven runs to defeat Virginia Tech (15-19, 5-10) in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park.
 
How It Happened
The Jackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead on three hits in the opening stanza. Jessica Kowalewicz singled and eventually scored on a Hokie miscue, while Malea Bell and Katie Krzus touched home on a two-RBI single from Kelsey Chisholm.
 
Georgia Tech plated another run in the second to make it 4-0. In the top of the fourth, the Jackets laced together four hits for three runs to make it a 7-0 advantage. In the fourth, with one out, Kowalewicz doubled and Bell singled. The runners moved up on a ground out from Krzus.
 
Chisholm delivered another two-RBI single to make it 6-0. Sonnon singled and with Chisholm at third, drew a throw down to second allowing Chisholm to score, making it 7-0.
 
The Hokie bats warmed up in the bottom of the fifth. Virginia Tech put up three runs on five hits before Georgia Tech starter Emily Anderson struck out the final two batters to get out of the inning.
 
Anderson (3-8) earned the win after throwing a complete-game with three runs on nine hits and allowed just one walk with four strike outs.
 
The Hokies used three pitchers in the loss with starter Taylor Barnes (4-6) as the pitcher of record. Barnes threw 3.2 innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits.

– Darragh reached base in all four of her plate appearances, tying her career-high with three hits, including a double, and a walk
– Pierannunzi drew two walks and leads the team with 26 free trips
– Chisholm tallied two hits with four RBI for her ninth game this season with multiple RBI
– Kowalewicz and Bell each scored twice, and Kowalewicz added a pair of hits, including a double
