COLUMBUS, Ga. – Rain has forced the cancellation of Georgia Tech’s games at the NFCA Leadoff Classic this weekend. Officials had pushed the start of today’s games back four hours, but another band of heavy rain moved through this morning. The wild weather in the Columbus area included tornado warnings and flooding.
Georgia Tech had its games against Louisiana-Lafayette and LSU last night rained out, but several teams did play at least one game on Friday. The Jackets were supposed to have taken on Illinois State and Northwestern today and then Penn State tomorrow.
Several other teams have also left while some are going to stay and try to get at least a game in Saturday or Sunday. The forecast for Sunday calls for a mix of snow and rain and temperatures barely reaching 40 degrees. Over four inches of rain has fallen in the area since Friday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets will now host the Buzz Classic, March 6-8, at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex in Woodstock, Ga. Georgia Tech will play Mercer (4 p.m.) and Purdue (6 p.m.) on Friday, Toledo (1 p.m.) and Jacksonville State (4 p.m.) on Saturday and then Western Kentucky (12 p.m.) Sunday.
