BLACKSBURG, Va. – Eighteen walks and three hit-by-pitches proved too much to overcome as Georgia Tech baseball dropped Game 2 to Virginia Tech, 13-1, on Saturday night at Atlantic Union Bank Park.
The Yellow Jackets (20-15, 7-10 ACC) held the Hokies (20-12, 7-9 ACC) to just four hits after the first inning and seven hits overall, but three hits led to four Virginia Tech runs in the first to build its lead. VT then scored six in the eighth once the game was out of reach.
Georgia Tech entered the weekend without its usual weekend rotation due to injury and turned to LHP Dalton Smith in Game 2 for just his second career weekend start. Smith (2-1) took his first loss of the season, fighting through two innings as he struggled with his command, walking six. RHP Aeden Finateri then covered the next 3.0 innings, while RHP Demitri Diamant, LHP Joseph Mannelly and RHP Logan Bogue closed.
At the plate, Georgia Tech was held to just five hits on the night. Kristian Campbell, Jake DeLeo, Stephen Reid, Jack Rubenstein and Angelo Dispigna all finished with a hit with Reid recording the lone RBI.
Virginia Tech was led by RHP Griffin Green, who allowed just one run on three hits with seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings. At the plate, Jack Hurley hit the big three-run home run in the first.
Georgia Tech will look to take Game 3 on Sunday, April 16. First pitch was moved up to noon and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
