THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s tennis freshman Kate Sharabura has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. Sharabura posted a 4-1 overall record at the Carolina Kickoff to open the spring slate.
The Atlanta, Ga., native continued her impressive freshman campaign over the weekend, going 2-0 in singles action and 2-1 in doubles play. Sharabura opened the tournament on Friday collecting a straight-set, 6-3, 6-4, victory over South Carolina’s Kendall Couch, before rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Wake Forest’s Maddie Lynch on Saturday to close out singles competition.
In doubles play, Sharabura partnered with teammate Carol Lee to go 2-1 on the weekend. The pair dropped their opening match on Friday against South Carolina, but rebounded with a 6-3 victory over Auburn’s Ariana Arsenault and Selin Ovunc, who were preseason ranked No. 22 in the fall.
The pair capped the tournament on Saturday collecting a dominating win over the No. 2-ranked doubles team in the country, Wake Forest’s Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth. The tandems stood knotted at 3-all before Sharabura and Lee won the next three games to collect a 6-3 victory.
