Seven Jackets Named To All-ACC Outdoor Track & Field Academic Teams

Aug. 5, 2009

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Seven Georgia Tech student-athletes have been named to the 2009 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Academic Track & Field Teams, as announced by Commissioner John D. Swofford Wednesday.

Five women – Alana Clooten, Mary Kate DuBard, Kimery Hern, Erica Penk and Joanna Wright – and two men – E.C. Gibbs and Casey Gramling were recognized for their impressive seasons in and out of the classroom.

Gibbs is one of just three male performers to earn an All-ACC Academic honor for the third time in his career, while Clooten, Hern and Wright join a list of 13 female performers to earn an honor for the second time their career. This marks the first time the conference has differentiated teams between the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Florida State led all schools with 18 performers on the 80-person list – 10 on the men’s side and eight on the women’s side. Tech’s five female performers were the third-most among women’s selections.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be in at least their second year of competition and have a 3.00 grade point average over their career and over the last two semesters. Nominees are then judged by a committee looking 60% at academic performance and 40% at athletic achievement.
