Schniederjans Named SGA National Amateur of the Month

May 5, 2014

Birmingham, Ala. – Georgia Tech junior Ollie Schniederjans edged Alabama’s Bobby Wyatt by a narrow margin to win the Southern Golf Association’s National Amateur of the Month Award for April.

Schniederjans stretched his winning streak to three victories by finishing first twice in April, capped by taking the title in the Atlantic Coast Conference Golf Championship at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. He won the individual title by five strokes with a 12-under 204 total to lead Tech to the ACC team title. Tech was able to fight off Florida State in part due to the strength of Schniederjans’ brilliant 65 in tough weather conditions in the opening round. Earlier in April, he was co-champ in the Robert Kepler Invitational on Ohio State’s famed Scarlet Course.

Schniederjans became the first player in Tech history to win five tournaments during a school year. He kick-started his current three-streak by winning the prestigious Valspar Collegiate in Palm City, Fla., in March and was runner-up in the voting for that month’s award for the second time in six months.

This time, he edged Wyatt, a senior, by a single vote from the SGA’s blue-ribbon national selection panel. Wyatt took honorable mention on the strength of his SEC Golf Championship victory at St. Simons Island, Ga., in impressive fashion by shooting 18-under 192 on the 7,005-yard par-70 Sea Island GC – including a school-record 61 in the second round. He previously won this SGA award two years ago after winning the Sunnehanna Amateur.

The national selection panel consists of notable golf journalists, officials and coaches. The coveted March-thru-October award, now in its 12th year, is one of many ways the SGA promotes and advances amateur golf, including its storied Southern Amateur, the 108th playing set for July at the exclusive Honors Course near Chattanooga.
