As a Junior In 2010-11: Earned season best times in the 100 and 200 breast at the ACC Championships finishing 10th in the 100 breast with a time of 55.16 and 14th in the 200 breast with a time of 2:01.19 to earn points for the Jackets … Also netted a career best time in the 50 free with a 21.25 second finish at the ACC Championships.
As A Sophomore In 2009-10: Set career best times at the ACC Championships in the preliminaries of the 100 breast (54.66) and finals of the 200 breast (1:59.72) …. took sixth in the 100 and ninth in the 200 breast at the ACC Championships with times of 54.76 and 1:59.72 respectively … Finished first in both the 100 and 200 breast vs. Emory with times of 55.73 and 2:03.55 respectively … Touched the wall first in the 100 breast with a time of 56.53 vs. NC State … Took home first in the 200 breast vs. Duke with a time of 2:08.25.
As A Freshman In 2008-09: At the ACC Championships, set career-highs in the 50 free (21.66), 100 breast (56.18) and 200 breast (2:02.99).
High School: Four-year letterwinner for Coach Jay Smith … 2008 Junior National Qualifier in the 50 breast, 100 breast and 200 breast … 2007 and 2008 NCSA Junior National Qualifier in the 50 breast, 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM … 2008 high school All-American in the 100 breast … Named the 2008 Male Athlete of the Year for winter sports as well as the Virginia Beach Sports Club Outstanding Male Athlete Award … Four-time all-state in the 100 breast and 200 IM … Three-time school MVP … Holds the school[apos]s lifetime high points award … Set new district and school record in the 100 breast … Member of the honor roll, National Honor Society, Student Cooperative Association and Student Council (vice president as a junior and senior) … Recipient of the Cavalier Award and Student of the Quarter as a junior … Also played club lacrosse for one season.
Personal: Born Matthew Eric Vaughan on Sept. 11, 1990, in Ventura, Calif. … Son of Joseph and Vicki Vaughan … Brother of Jackie … Father was a swimmer at William & Mary from 1975-79, while grandfather, Joseph Alvin Vaughan, attended Georgia Tech for one year … Chose to attend Georgia Tech because of the swim team program, location and facilities … Hobbies include surfing, wave boarding, listening to music, playing the bass guitar and hanging out with friends … Is a Polymer Fiber Engineering major.
