JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Day two at the NCAA East Regionals added another Yellow Jacket to the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field roster at the NCAA Championships as Shawn Roberts earned his spot in the 800m run after a 12th place finish.
Roberts took the final qualifying spot with his time of 1:48.97 in the quarterfinals of the race making his way to his first NCAA Championships. He was one of three ACC runners to make the cut.
Also competing on the day was Jonathan Gardner in the triple jump who just missed out on a trip to Des Moines with a 15th place, 15.47m (50-9.25) finish. Gardner registered the leap in his second attempt on the day.
Rounding out the pack of Georgia Tech athletes on the day was Melanie Akwule who finished 29th in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.55 seconds.
Five Jackets will be in action Saturday on the final day of the NCAA East Regionals. Aaron Unterberger, Nikita Kirillov, Julienne McKee, Jhanelle McLeod and Mykhail Chambers will all compete for Tech.
