Georgia Tech Head Coach Brian Gregory

On Georgia Tech’s Performance

“I thought our intensity and energy were good in the first half.  Defensively I thought we were really, really good.  We did a good job on the glass again today against a very long and athletic team.  But, unfortunately, there were a couple things in the second half, including their defense doing a good job guarding the basket, and their offense attacking the basket off the dribble, which equated to something like 25 second half free throws and that is hard to overcome.”

“I’m pleased with the energy our guys played with against an athletic, very talented team that has the ability once they gain some consistency to be very, very good.”

“I thought (St. John’s) pressure was good in the second half and we didn’t handle it very well.  It’s tough to take when you score more baskets and shoot better from three and get outscored at the free throw line.  Their pressure led to turnovers which led to transition baskets.  They had 20 points on transition baskets, which beat us 20 to 10.  There’s the difference in the game.”

On how Chris Obekpa of St. John’s impacts the game on defense:

“He doesn’t just get blocks; he gets timely blocks at crucial times.  His blocks often lead to breaks.  He is a great weapon.”

St. John’s Head Coach Steve Lavin
Opening Statement:
“I thought the kids played with purpose at the end of the first half and throughout the second half. We played as a cohesive bunch and I think these last two games were good for us. Sometimes you don’t play well and win, and sometimes you play great and lose. It seems counter-intuitive, somewhat like life. I think in both of these games, the loss and the win, our team grew up a bit.”

On the full-line substitution early in the game:
“The strength of this team is it’s versatility. It’s the deepest team that I’ve coached, so we’re going to be a team that utilizes its depth.”

On the addition of the full-court pressure defense:
“We’ll be a multiple-defense team because of the size, quickness, depth and overall flexibility to play different ways. This will be a multiple-defense team all year long.”

On tonight’s performance:
“If there is one word to describe our team today, it would be ‘aggression.’ I think it was a bounce-back win for our team and there was an aggression on display at both ends of the floor. We were a very aggressive outfit that came with a mindset get a win.”
