ATLANTA – David North, Ashlee Kidd and Ryan Bishop were named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, January 15, 2007.
North, a junior from Durban, South Africa, won both the singles and doubles championships at the J. Webb Horton Classic this weekend. North and teammate Jose Muguruza were the last men standing in the doubles draw, defeating Chris Cloer and Ryan Boyajian of Florida State Sunday in the final, 9-7. In the singles bracket, North, ranked No. 36 in the country, overwhelmed Bradley Mixson of Florida State, 6-1, 6-2 Saturday to earn the tournament title. He also defeated Ryan Rowe of Illinois, who is ranked No. 11 in the country, 6-1, 6-3 on his way to the title.
Kidd, a senior from St. Petersburg, Fla., Won the women’s 400-meter dash with an NCAA provisional time of 53.47. Kidd placed third in the 200-meter dash with another NCAA provisional time of 23.85. She ran the 60-meter dash in 7.55 seconds to finish fifth to qualify for the finals. Kidd currently ranks first in the ACC in the 60m, 200m and 400m.
Bishop, a senior from Signal Mountain, Tenn., led Georgia Tech to wins over Florida Atlantic (179-106) and Division III No. 2 Emory (144-89) in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Bishop just missed an NCAA `B’ standard in the 100 breast (56.76) and was a couple of seconds off the `B’ cut of the 200 breast (2:03.72). Bishop took first place in the 200 back (1:53.07), 100 breast, 200 breast and 400 individual medley (3:58.40) and finished second in the 200 free (1:41.43) and 500 free (4:37.52). Bishop ranks fourth in the ACC in the 200 IM (1:50.98), sixth in the 100 breast, 400 IM and eighth in the 200 breast for the season.
