May 7, 2009

Atlanta Regional Tournament Central | NCAA Tournament Bracket

ATLANTA – The eighth-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will host Mississippi, Denver and Jackson State in the first two rounds of the 2009 NCAA Tournament this weekend. The Yellow Jackets (16-7) open the tournament as the No. 9 national seed, and will face Jackson State (13-7) Friday at 1 p.m. in opening-round action.

The winner of that match advances to a second round meeting with either Ole Miss or Denver, scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.

Tech enters the NCAA Tournament for the 10th straight year under head coach Bryan Shelton, and will host the first and second rounds for the fifth consecutive season.

The Jackets, who will be represented by four players in the NCAA Single Tournament May 20-25, are led in singles on the season by All-American freshman Irina Falconi. Falconi boasts a 28-10 overall record, while going 14-8 in dual match play. She is currently the 12th-ranked singles player in the country and has gone 17-9 against nationally ranked opponents this season.

Tech will meet Jackson State for the first time in program history Friday. With a win, the Jackets will reach the second round for the eighth straight season. The Jackets are 0-2 against possible second round opponent Ole Miss, but have not faced the Rebels since the 1991 season. Tech is 1-0 all-time against Denver, taking the lone match in 2007 by a 6-1 result.

The NCAA’s continue with the Round of 16 beginning May 15 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the Texas A&M campus in College Station, Texas.
