ATLANTA – Tyler Greene went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and Matt Wieters added a three-run homer to lead fifth-ranked Georgia Tech (37-14, 21-6 ACC) to an 11-1 win and series sweep over Virginia Tech (20-26, 5-18) on Sunday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets clinched at least second place in the ACC regular season race. Georgia Tech reduced its “magic number” to clinch the regular season title to two over second place Miami (19-7-1 / lost to Virginia, 4-3, on Sunday). Clemson, Florida State and North Carolina were all eliminated from the regular season title chase on Sunday afternoon.
Georgia Tech starter Ryan Turner (6-2) pitched 6.2 solid innings, allowing just one run, to earn the win. The left-hander allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out five and lowered his season ERA to 3.29. Tim Gustafson worked 1.1 innings of shutout relief, and Jordan Crews pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game.
Georgia Tech pitching allowed a total of three runs in 24 innings in the three-game series, outscoring Virginia Tech, 48-3.
Greene had a home run, two singles, two runs scored and four RBI. Wieters drove in four runs, and Wes Hodges added two hits and two runs scored.
Three Virginia Tech errors led to three unearned runs and a 4-0 Georgia Tech lead after two innings. The Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the first inning when Steven Blackwood had a RBI single, Matt Wieters was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Andy Hawranick added a sacrifice fly. Mike Trapani scored on a throwing error from second baseman Matt Hacker.
The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases in the fifth inning on a walk, single and hit batter before Greene connected on his 11th home run and fourth grand slam of the season.
A three run homer from Wieters, his eighth of the year, made the score 11-1 in the eighth inning.
The Hokies scored their only run on a RBI groundout from Billy Marn in the sixth inning.
Virginia Tech starter Jake Chaney (5-4) took the loss after surrendering eight runs, five of which were earned, in 4.2 innings.
Georgia Tech returns to action on Thursday night when the Yellow Jackets open a three-game ACC series at North Carolina to close out the regular season.
