No. 38 Men's Tennis Tops Furman, 6-1

GREENVILLE, S.C. (March 14) – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team, ranked No. 38 in the country, overcame an early deficit to defeat the No. 74 Furman Paladins 6-1 at Mickel Tennis Center March 14.

The Paladins (6-6) opened the dual match by taking two of three doubles matches, thus earning them the doubles point. Georgia Tech (9-3) jumped out to a quick lead as Sergio Aguirre and Jason Jeong hastily defeated Furman’s Chris Henderson and Charlie Lloyd at No. 3 doubles. The Paladins answered with John Chesworth and James Cameron’s 8-6 victory at No. 1 over Roger Anderson and David Wright. Freshmen Andrew Rogers and Patrick Fillnow clinched the doubles point with a 9-8 triumph against Tech’s Romain Coirault and Joao Menano.

The Yellow Jackets, however, stormed back by sweeping the Paladins in singles action. At No. 1, Tech’s Coirault broke Lee Nickell’s serve in the final game to preserve a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory. Tech’s Anderson quickly defeated Furman’s Cameron, 7-6, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3, Furman’s Chesworth fell to Tech’s Wright 6-7, 6-2, 7-6, and Paladin Fillnow lost to Stephen Moros 7-6, 6-2 at No. 4. Furman’s Patrick Gaughan and Chris Henderson also dropped three-set matches against the Yellow Jackets.
