No. 24 Tech Swings Past St. Joseph's, 9-1 (5) and 6-0

ATLANTA – Sophomore right fielder Amy Hosier went 4-for-7 with three runs batted in as No. 24 Georgia Tech swept St. Joseph’s. 9-1 (5) and 6-0, this afternoon at Glenn Field. Junior Jessica Sallinger (12-3) allowed one hit in five innings of work, tallying 10 strikeouts for the ninth time this season in the nightcap, while senior Erin Voeltz (9-2) threw five shutout innings in the opener, scattering three hits and striking out four.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning as sophomore Lauren Schlechte drew a walk with the bases loaded to scored Soraya Reddick who reached on a leadoff walk. Senior catcher Tasha Waugh singled to left field to drive in the second run of the inning for the Jackets as Tech led 2-0 after one inning of play.

Tech plated three more runs in the bottom of the third inning as sophomore right fielder Amy Hosier and junior second baseman Katie Donovan tallied consecutive singles and junior designated hitter Liz Bartle drove them in with a base hit up the middle. Waugh then hit a sacrifice fly to score Bartle as the Jackets pushed their lead to five after three complete innings.

The Jackets pushed another two runs across in the fourth inning as Reddick doubled to right center field and Hosier drove her in with a double to center field. Senior shortstop Tara Knudsen followed with the third straight double for the Yellow Jackets to score Hosier as the lead advanced to seven.

Freshman Sarah Wood entered the circle for Tech in the fifth inning. After a strikeout, SJU’s Lynn Ravert doubled to right field and reached third base on an error by the Jackets. Wood retired the next batter with a strikeout. The Hawks got on the scoreboard as the Rambling Wreck committed their second error of the inning as Tech led 7-1 after four-and-a-half innings.

The Yellow Jackets put the game away in the fifth inning by way of the eight-run rule as Tech scored two runs. Freshman Kristina Hull led off with a walk and senior left fielder Sara Wissmann reached first base on a fielder’s choice. Reddick reached safely on an error by the Hawks’ second baseman as Tech had runners at first and second with one out. Hosier was walked to load the bases for Georgia Tech and Knudsen drove in two runs with a blast off the right field fence to end game one.

Tech scored nine runs, on 10 hits and committed two errors, while SJU tallied one run, on four hits and had two errors.

Knudsen and Hosier led the Yellow Jackets offensively in game one. Knudsen went 2-for-3, with two runs batted in, while Hosier finished 2-for-3, with a double and one RBI.

In the nightcap, the Yellow Jackets stranded three base runners in the first inning as Hawks’ pitcher Lauren Hughes recorded a two pop outs and a strikeout to end the Tech threat.

The Rambling Wreck broke through the scoreless tie in the fourth inning as junior left fielder Kirin Kumar singled through the right side with the bases loaded to plate Bartle. Reddick followed with a ground out to score Waugh. The Yellow Jackets collected their third run of the inning on a wild pitch. Hosier then smashed her team leading 10th double of the season to left center field to tally another run for Tech as the Jackets led 4-0 after four innings of play.

Wood came into the game for the Jackets on the mound in the top of the sixth inning. Wood retired all three batters in the sixth inning, tallying one strikeout.

The Yellow Jackets tallied two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to grab a 6-0 lead. Reddick doubled down the left field line after Waugh singled and stole second base to score the first run. Hosier then followed with her second double of the afternoon with a shot in the left center gap to plate Reddick.

Wood retired three of the five batters in the seventh inning, allowing one base hit, throwing two innings, allowing one hit, one walk and recording one strikeout.

Tech scored six runs, on eight hits and had no errors, while SJU had no runs, had two hits and one error.

Georgia Tech will remain in Atlanta as the Yellow Jackets will host Ball State for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 17, for a 2 p.m. start at Glenn Field. Tech games can be followed on GameTracker on www.ramblinwreck.com.
