THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech softball team split two games on Saturday of the Georgia Tech Classic, dropping its first game of the season to Indiana, 4-1, before defeating Miami (Ohio), 6-4.
The No. 24 Jackets improved to 8-1 overall, while the Hoosiers improved to 6-3 and the Redhawks fell to 0-3.
Game 1 – Indiana 4, Georgia Tech 1
The Hoosiers got a run across first in the third inning and added three more on three hits in the fourth.
The Jackets were able to get on the board with a run in the fifth inning. Katie Johnsky hit a leadoff double and scored on a triple off the bat of Ashley Thomas. Tech was unable to score A. Thomas from third, and the Jackets left a total nine runners on base in the game.
Alysha Rudnik went 2-for-4 and Johnsky was 1-for-2 with a walk, a double and a run.
Hope Rush (4-1) took her first loss of the season going six innings with eight hits, four earned runs and one strikeout.
Lora Olson (3-1) tossed a complete game for the Hoosiers with four hits, one earned run, seven walks and three strikeouts.
Game 2 – Georgia Tech 6, Miami (Ohio) 4
The Redhawks scored first on an RBI double from Allie Larrabee and added two more in the top of the fourth on three hits.
Karly Fullem scored in the second inning for Tech and Hope Rush blasted her fifth home run on the season to score two more in the third.
The Jackets were able to tack on two additional runs in the fourth inning. Maddie Lionberger singled to lead off, and both Ashley Thomas and Chelsie Thomas ran out bunts to load the bases. Lionberger scored on a ground-out by Alysha Rudnik and Ashley Thomas scored on a Courtney Ziese ground-out.
Chelsie Thomas added a run in the bottom of the sixth to give Tech a 6-3 lead. The Redhawks mustered one run in the top of the seventh, but the Jackets held on for the win.
Fullem earned her first win of the season, pitching six innings with six hits, three runs and two strikeouts. Freshman Ashley Clifton earned her first save of the season and threw the last 1.0 innings with one hit and one run.
Starter Megan Mattera (0-1) was the pitcher of record for Miami (Ohio). She pitched four innings with eight hits, five runs and two walks.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action Sunday with a rematch against Indiana at 1 p.m. in the final game of the Georgia Tech Classic.
