No. 23 Tech Falls to No. 5 Georgia, 4-1

ATLANTA – No. 5 Georgia (33-6) hit three home runs in the game to down No. 23 Georgia Tech (31-8), 4-1, at Glenn Field this afternoon. Tech’s Liz Bartle went 2-for-3, with a home run to lead the Yellow Jackets. UGA’s Kasi Carroll (7-1) tossed a complete game for the Bulldogs, allowing four hits and one run, while fanning seven.

Georgia broke a scoreless tie in the third inning as Ashley Godfrey homered to center field to put the fifth-ranked Bulldogs up 1-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, both teams vacated the field as rain interrupted play for an hour-and-27 minutes. After the rain delay, UGA’s Shannon McKeon hit the game’s second home run to right field as Tech trailed 2-0.

The Bulldogs’ Kim Wendland extended the lead to four runs with a two-run home run in the fifth inning. The Yellow Jackets’ Bartle led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a home run to close out the game’s scoring as Tech fell by a final score of 4-1.

Junior Jessica Sallinger (19-4) pitched five innings, scattering five hits, giving up four earned runs and struck out six. Senior Erin Voeltz threw the final two innings for the Jackets, allowing one hit and struck out one.

Seniors Tara Knudsen and Sara Wissmann tallied the other hits for the Rambling Wreck, each going 1-for-3 on the day. Bartle extended her hitting streak to eight games after tallying two hits and one RBI.

The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled due to the rain delay in the opener. There has been no date scheduled for a make up.

Tech will open up Atlantic Coast Conference play as they travel to Tallahassee, Fla., for a doubleheader with No. 4 Florida State (38-4). The Seminoles and Yellow Jackets will battle at 1 p.m. The action can be followed on www.ramblingwreck.com.
