April 10, 2009

Box Score

ATLANTA – Sophomore Kristen Adkins threw a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts as the No. 22 Georgia Tech softball team (29-11, 7-3 ACC) shut out NC State (20-17, 3-7), 8-0, in five innings Friday night at Mewborn Field. Game two of the doubleheader was suspended in the sixth inning tied at one after the stadium was evacuated for a tornado warning. It will be made up at Noon tomorrow before the scheduled 1 p.m. series finale.

Senior Blair Shimandle was 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Yellow Jackets, while redshirt junior Jen Yee, senior Whitney Haller and freshman Jessica Sinclair added two hits apiece.

It was a scoreless game until the bottom of the third inning when the Yellow Jackets struck for four runs off NC State starter Mendy McKenzie. Sinclair led off with a single and sophomore Christy Jones was hit by a pitch putting two on with nobody out. Yee followed with a single to center, but when the throw in by NC State center fielder Hannah Ojeda was wild, Sinclair scored the game’s first run.

Shimandle followed with a RBI ground out making the score 2-0, but the Jackets were not done there. Freshman Kelsi Weseman drew a walk and then a single through the left side by Haller made it a 3-0 game. Senior Tiffany Johnson capped the scoring in the inning with a RBI single to left.

Adkins, meanwhile, was on cruise control throughout the game. The only hit she allowed was a leadoff single by Alyssa Ishibashi in the fourth inning as she pitched her third shutout of the season and improved to 15-6.

Tech added three more runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth to complete the run-rule win. RBI doubles by Shimandle and Weseman gave the Jackets two more runs in the fourth while the third run of the inning scored on an error. Shimandle then drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to end the game.

McKenzie (8-8) took the loss as she was charged for eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits and three walks. She had six strikeouts.

Game two was tied at one heading to the top of the sixth inning when play was suspended. A tornado warning was issued and Mewborn Field was evacuated. Tech scored its run in the bottom of the first inning on a Haller RBI single, while the Wolfpack tied it in the fourth on a solo home run by Allison Presnell. Tech pitcher Tiffany Johnson and NC State’s Lindsay Campana were locked up in a pitcher’s duel as they combined for 16 strikeouts though five innings.

The second game will pick up in the top of the sixth inning at Noon tomorrow and then game three of this series will take place at 1 p.m. at Mewborn Field. Live audio and stats will be available at www.ramblinwreck.com. Game three will also be broadcast on ACC Select for a small fee.
