CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Senior Jessica Weaver went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI as the No. 20/20 Georgia Tech softball team (42-8, 16-1 ACC) beat Boston College (16-31, 5-13), 9-7, Sunday afternoon to complete a weekend sweep at Shea Field.
Weaver’s home run broke open a 5-5 game in the fifth inning and proved to be the game-winner as she also added a double, single and two runs scored on the day. Junior Kelsi Weseman hit her league-leading 19th home run of the season, while freshman Ashley Thomas added two hits and two runs scored. Both Thomas and sophomore Caitlin Jordan extended their hitting streaks to nine games.
Sophomore Hope Rush (12-3) got the win as she allowed seven earned runs on eight hits in five innings of work. She walked three and struck out three. Freshman Lindsey Anderson pitched two scoreless innings of relief for her second save of the season. She gave up two hits, walked one and struck out three.
Georgia Tech jumped out first with a pair of first-inning runs. Freshman Ashley Thomas got it going with a single up the middle extending her hitting streak to nine games. After stealing second base, she scored when junior Kelsi Weseman hit her league-leading 19th home run of the season to left-center field.
The Eagles answered with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Nicole D’Argento led off with a home run and then a RBI double by Ali Lynette-Krech tied the game later in the inning. With two on and two out, Maria Pandolfo hit a three-run homer to put BC on top 5-2 after an inning.
Georgia Tech came back for two runs in the top of the second. Senior Jessica Weaver and freshman Hayley Downs traded one-out doubles for the third run and then Downs made it 5-4 when she scored on a BC error.
Tech tied the game in the third on a RBI single by Jessica Weaver, but sophomore pinch runner Kelly Delashmit was thrown out at home attempting to score the go-ahead run.
Weaver continued her hot hitting as she launched a three-run home run to dead center field in the top of the fifth inning giving the Yellow Jackets the lead again at 8-5.
Boston College came right back once again as Tory Speer followed up a leadoff walk with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut Tech’s lead to 8-7.
The Yellow Jackets came back with a run in the sixth inning on a sac fly by Kristine Priebe to take a 9-7 lead.
BC loaded the bases with two outs against Anderson in the sixth inning, but Tory Speer was retired on a grounder to Priebe at first ending the threat.
Georgia Tech closes out the 2011 regular season next weekend against Florida State at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets and Seminoles will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and then close out the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Live video, blog, audio and stats will be available at RamblinWreck.com.
