No. 11 Jackets Tame Tigers

THE FLATS — No. 11 Georgia Tech fired on all cylinders on the way to a sweep (25-13, 25-12, 25-21) of Clemson, hitting at nearly a .500 clip en route to victory on Wednesday night in O’Keefe Gymnasium. The Yellow Jackets doubled the Tigers through the first two sets, outscoring Clemson 75-46 by the match’s end.

In yet another historic night for senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann, the decorated Jacket took sole possession of ninth place in program history in career kills while tying Monique Mead (2009-12) for fifth all-time in career aces. Bergmann led the match tallying 18 kills with a pair of aces on the night, moving to 1,478 career kills as well as 148 career aces to achieve the historic marks.

Aside from Bergmann’s record-setting feats, the Yellow Jackets imposed their will inside as middle blockers Erin Moss and Breland Morrissette both hit over a .500 clip. Moss joined Bergmann with double-digit kills, coming away with 10 on a .588 hitting percentage on top of two blocks. Morrissette followed close behind with eight kills while hitting .571. The offense ran through junior setter Bella D’Amico as she picked up 35 assists. Defensively, sophomore outside hitter Bianca Bertolino led the squad with 13 digs.

Tech (12-4, 5-2 ACC) trounced Clemson (11-8, 2-5 ACC) on the stat sheet, outmatching the Tigers in kills (48-31), hitting percentage (.433-.167), assists (44-30) and digs (46-38).

How it Happened

Georgia Tech’s dominance started in the first set as the Jackets took seven straight points to leap ahead, 9-2. An ensuing five-point run increased the advantage to double digits, moving the White and Gold further in front, 14-4. The lead proved to be insurmountable as Tech went on to claim four of the final five points with kills from four different Yellow Jackets. Sophomore right-side hitter Laura Fischer capped the set with her kill as Georgia Tech took set one by double digits, 25-13.

The second set was much of the same as the Jackets claimed eight of the first nine points for an 8-1 advantage. Tech took four of five points shortly after to build up a 12-4 lead, then used a six-point run for another double-digit lead, topping the Tigers, 19-6. The White and Gold closed out the set on a Clemson error, resulting in a 25-12 victory in set two.

Despite Georgia Tech claiming eight points in nine opportunities for an early, 10-5 lead in the third set, Clemson managed to keep pace. Still, the Yellow Jackets used a pair of three-point bursts to keep their distance up to leads of 14-8 and 20-16. In the end, Bergmann’s final kill of the night secured a 25-21 set-three triumph, resulting in Tech’s 10th sweep of the season and fifth of ACC play.
