Nissan #ProJackets Golf Report

Aug. 1, 2017

THE FLATS – For all the good will Matt Kuchar generated during the final round of the Open Championship two weeks ago, his biggest immediate benefit was solidifying his position not only in the FedEx Cup points race but in making the United States team for the upcoming Presidents Cup.

If Kuchar can maintain his current position throughout the rest of the regular season and the FedEx Cup playoffs, he will qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club for the eighth straight year, and he will be on the USA team in a Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup for the eighth consecutive year.

After tying for 32nd place and leading a contingent of seven former Yellow Jackets at last weekend’s RBC Canadian Open, Kuchar stands No. 17 in the FedEx Cup race, and the top 30 advance to the Tour Championship in September. He also stands eighth in points for the Presidents Cup (Sept. 28-Oct. 1), with the top 10 through events of Sept. 4 automatically earning a spot on the team.

Among the seven Jackets competing at Glen Abbey last weekend, Richy Werenski (154th in FedEx Cup points), Ollie Schniederjans (68th), Bryce Molder (184th) and Stewart Cink (67th) made the cut. Cameron Tringale (124th) and Roberto Castro (170th) missed the weekend. The top 125 in Fed Ex Cup points through the Wyndham Championship on Aug, 17-20 will qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Kuchar is the only Jacket in the field for this week’s World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Five others – Chesson Hadley, Molder, Schniederjans, Tringale and Werenski – will be competing in the Barracuda Championship in Reno, Nev., which features the unique modified stableford scoring format. With his 2017-18 PGA Tour card assured after winning the LECOM Health Challenge on the Web.com Tour four weeks ago, Hadley is competing in his third PGA Tour event since then.

Web.com Tour: Chesson Hadley sits No. 8 in the Web.com Tour earnings (top 25 get their PGA Tour cards for 2017-18), but Nicholas Thompson (34th), Seth Reeves (55th) and Anders Albertson (54th) have ground to make up with four events left on the Web.com Tour regular-season schedule. Thompson tied for 21st and Albertson tied for 34th in last weekend’s Digital Ally Open, neither making any significant headway. This week they are in Hayward, Calif., for the Ellie Mae Classic, in which Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has a sponsor’s exemption.
