May 7, 2011

Norman, Okla. – Georgia Tech assistant golf coach Christian Newton has been named one of five finalists for the 2011 Jan Strickland Award presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf as selected by the GCAA.

The Strickland Award is presented to the NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA or NJCAA assistant coach that, among other things, has excelled in working with their student-athletes both on the course and in the classroom.

Newton, a finalist for this award three times, has helped lead the Yellow Jackets to the NCAA Tournament four straight years and to the ACC Championship each of the last three years. This year’s Tech team is ranked No. 2 in the nation, and four of its five players are ranked among the nation’s top 55 individuals.

The other finalists are Steve Bradley of Florida, Southern California’s Josh Brewer, Shane Warren of LSU and Michigan’s Chris Whitten.

The Strickland Award winner will be announced May 18. The recipient will have the opportunity to further his professional development by receiving an invitation to the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Kingdom in Carlsbad, Calif.
