Jackets Drop Saturday Game Against No. 20 Blue Devils, 6-5

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (17-16, 5-6 ACC) fell in game two of the series against No. 20 Duke (21-10, 7-1 ACC) with a 6-5 result on Saturday afternoon.

QUICK HITS

• Sydnie Watts made her seventh start, 12^th appearance of the season, on Saturday and faced 20 batters across 4.0 innings pitched.
• Katie Cunane made her fifth appearance of the season and faced six batters across her 0.2 innings pitched.
• Cunane was relieved by Makayla Coffield, marking her 11^th relief appearance, 13^th appearance of the season. Coffield finished the day facing five batters across 1.1 innings pitched.
• Kenley Hilleary made her 16^threlief appearance, 18^th appearance of the season, recording two strikeouts across 1.0 innings pitched.
• Saturday’s appearance marked Hilleary’s fifth appearance in each of Tech’s last five games.
• Addison Leschber highlighted Tech on Saturday with two home runs, one walk, and 10 putouts. Her two-home run performance on Saturday marked the second time in the senior’s career that she recorded multiple home runs in a game.
• With her two home runs on Saturday, Leschber now leads Tech in home runs this season (8) with Alyssa Willer, Reese Hunter, and Gracyn Tucker all just behind her with seven home runs respectively.
• Leschber’s two hits and two RBI bring her to three multi-hit games and six multi-RBI games. Her two runs earned the senior her first multi-run game of the season.
• Tech has recorded a home run in 21 of its 33 total games so far this season. Of those 21 games, the Yellow Jackets have recorded multiple home runs in 14 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Tech scored its first run of the day in the bottom of the second off of Leschber’s home run over right field.
• Duke was able to get on the board in the top of the fourth as a home run over left field saw one run come across. Later in the fourth inning, Duke would cut Tech’s lead to two runs as the Yellow Jackets chose to take out the runner heading for third.
• The Blue Devils took the lead in the top of the fifth with three runs on four hits and one Tech error starting with a home run over right field that scored two runs. A single from left field with one runner on second would prove to be enough for the Blue Devils to take the 5-4 lead.
• Tech trailed by two runs heading into the bottom of the sixth after a sacrificed bunt did what it was meant to and advanced Duke’s runner home from third. The Yellow Jackets got that run back in the bottom half of the inning off another Leschber home run this time over left field.

The Yellow Jackets will close out the series against No. 20 Duke with one final game March 22 at Mewborn Field. Sunday’s game can be watched on ACCN.

Full Steam Ahead
