Campbell Breaks 400 IM Record

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech swimming and diving competed in day three of the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships hosted at McAuley Aquatic Center on Thursday. The men’s team is currently fifth and the women’s team is currently tenth.

McKenzie Campbell improved her own 400 IM program record by 0.79 seconds during the finals of the event. Campbell led after the fly portion of the IM by 0.53 seconds. She would eventually be caught during the backstroke, trailing the leader by 3.07 seconds. Campbell would climb back to being 0.66 seconds behind the leader after the breaststroke as they headed into the 100 free portion of the IM. With her opponent in her sights, Campbell made up 1.08 seconds in the final 50 free to claim the victory in her final and the new program record.

The finals started with the 200 free relays. Tech’s men 200 free relay team of Kyle Barone, Caio Pumputis, Christian Ferraro and Austin Daniel secured an ‘A’ cut with a time of 1:23.80. The quartet, which already holds the program record in the event, won their heat and finished fourth overall, 0.65 seconds behind third place.

The Yellow Jackets had two A – Finalists on the night. Ferraro was the first Jacket to swim in an A – Final. He was in the 100 fly final where he put up a time of 45.93, good for eighth. Batur Ünlü qualified for the A – Final in the 200 free where he placed sixth with a time of 1:33.25.

Over in the diving well, Camryn Hidalgo was competing in the women’s 3-meter finals. Her opening dive was the best of the round, scoring 62.10 on her Inward 2 ½ Somersault Tuck (405C). Her highest scoring dive came on her third dive, a Forward 2 ½ Somersault 1 Twist Pike (5152B). This dive had the highest degree of difficulty (3.0) of any of her dives and she scored sevens and a 7.5 leading to a score of 64.50. Her total score on the night was 350.50, good for fifth.

There were eight more finalists for Georgia Tech on the night. Antonio Romero was the remaining B – Finalist for Tech. He swam in the 400 IM clocking in at 3:49.84.

The remainder of the Jackets finalists were all in C – Finals. They were:

• Abby Cohen (400 IM, 4:19.48)
• Rei Kuramoto (400 IM, 4:26.68)
• Matt Steele (400 IM, 3:51.60)
• Zora Ripková (100 fly, 53.09)
• Kyle Barone (100 fly, 46.81)
• Brooke Switzer (100 fly, 1:47.48)
• Clark Wakeland (200 free, 1:35.53)

Georgia Tech swimmers posted three more times that would have been invited to 2021 NCAA Championships. Campbell’s 400 IM time (4:11.23), Ferraro’s 100 fly time (45.84) and Ünlü’s 200 free time (1:33.25) would have all been good enough to qualify for the 2021 NCAA Championships.
