THE FLATS – Georgia Tech returns to the friendly confines of McCamish Pavilion for its next four games, beginning Monday night when hosts Charleston Southern for a 7 p.m. tip.

Coming off its first ACC championship season since 1993 and its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2011, the Yellow Jackets (3-1) have won three straight games, including an 88-78 win over cross-state rival Georgia Friday night, since dropping a 72-69 decision to Miami of Ohio in their season opener on Nov. 9. In between, the Yellow Jackets downed Stetson (77-52) and Lamar (75-66).

Reigning ACC Tournament MVP Michael Devoe (Orlando, Fla.), averaging a team-high 22.8 points and 5.3 assists per game, leads three Yellow Jackets averaging in double figures, along with senior forward Jordan Usher (Canton, Ga.) at 15.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, and freshman Dallan “Deebo” Coleman (Memphis, Tenn.) with 10.0 points per game.

Charleston Southern improved to 2-2 with a 119-63 home court victory Saturday over Division III Bob Jones University. The Buccaneers, 3-18 last season, defeated Division III Johnson & Wales, 118-71, in their season opener, and in between lost road games at Mississippi (93-68) and Wake Forest (95-59).

Monday’s game will be televised live on the ACC Network and also streamed live on the ESPN app. Radio coverage will be on the Georgia Tech Sports Network by Legends Sports and flagship station WCNN (680/93.7 the Fan), as well as on satellite radio (XM channel 384, SiriusXM app 974).

SERIES VS. CHARLESTON SOUTHERN

  • Georgia Tech and Charleston Southern are meeting for the first time since the 2010-11 season, when the Yellow Jackets took a 52-39 victory at home.
  • Tech has won the last six meetings and seven of eight overall in a series that dates back to 1978, when CSU was known at Baptist College.
  • All eight of the previous meetings were played at Alexander Memorial Coliseum, the Yellow Jackets’ former on-campus home.
  • Monday’s game is Tech’s first meeting against a member of the Big South Conference since December of 2018, a 79-69 home loss to Gardner-Webb. The Jackets are 23-4 all-time against the conference’s current membership.

THE OPENING TIP

  • Friendly confines – The Jackets play seven of their first eight games this season at McCamish Pavilion. Tech does not leave the state of Georgia to play until Dec. 18, when it travels to Phoenix, Ariz., to play Southern California.
  • 30 for 30 – Michael Devoe now has two 30-point games in his career, joining Moses Wright and Josh Okogie, each with three, as players with multiple 30-point games for Georgia Tech under head coach Josh Pastner.
  • Mikey likes it – Devoe leads the ACC in scoring at 22.8 points per game, ranked fourth in assists (5.0 apg), third in three-point percentage (.650), fourth in three-point field goals per game (3.25), and No. 2 in minutes (35.35 per game).
  • Point break – Splitting the point guard duties nearly evenly, Kyle Sturdivant and Deivon Smith have combined to average 11.0 points and 5.3 assists over four games, while compiling a 21:10 assist/turnover ratio. Sturdivant has started all four games, but Smith has averaged about four more minutes per game.
  • Big3 – Utilizing a rotation of Rodney Howard, Saba Gigiberia and Jordan Meka in the 5-spot vacated by ACC Player of the Year Moses Wright, Tech has received an aggregate 10.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Howard, who has started all four games and averaged 27.4 minutes, has accounted for most of that production, and has posted a positive plus-minus in each game thus far (aggregate +36).
  • Small ball – Tech has utilized a small lineup, sometimes by choice, sometimes not, without either of its three bigs, using both Khalid Moore and Jordan Usher at the 5-spot. Tech played the final 2:11 at Georgia small after Howard fouled out, ojutscoring the Bulldogs, 9-4.
  • Gang rebounding – Tech has outrebounded each opponent this season by at least nine (35-26 vs. Georgia) and have a plus-10 rebound margin collectively. The Jackets rank No. 2 in the ACC in rebound margin.
  • Beyond the arc – After hitting just four 3s in 17 attempts (all by Michael Devoe) against Miami of Ohio, Georgia Tech has gone 29-of-59 (49.2 percent) in the last three games, including 8-of-15. Five different players made at least one, with Michael Devoe hitting four. Seven different players hit a three against Lamar, four against Stetson. The Jackets rank third in the ACC in both three-point percentage (.434) and three-point defense (.266).
