INDIANAPOLIS – Sophomore Matt Figh finished second in the bonus consolation final in the 200-meter butterfly to lead the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams on day two of the 2003 ConocoPhillips U.S. National Swimming Championships.
Figh clocked a time of 2:03.64 to earn the runner-up finish in his heat and place 18th overall. His time would have placed fourth in the consolation final.
Figh reached the bonus consolation final by virtue of his 23rd-place finish in the preliminary round. He posted a time of 2:05.48, while junior teammate Itai Eden was 31st in 2:06.55. Former Tech great David Laitala finished 47th (2:11.08). Figh was also 44th in the 200 back (2:09.66).
The top swim on the women’s side came from freshman Ashley Kracke, who finished 28th in the 200 back with a time of 2:19.94. Sophomore Anna Saum was 42nd in the same event (2:21.87).
Sophomore Lisa Hancock finished 33rd in the 200 fly with a swim of 2:18.95, while classmate Cara DeVinny finished 60th in 2:21.97.
In other action, senior Josh Hersko was 60th in the 100 free (53.37), while DeVinny finished 64th in the 200 breast (2:44.87).
Competition continues through Saturday with prelims at 9 a.m., followed by 6 p.m. finals.
