OMAHA, Neb. – No. 23 Georgia Tech volleyball saw its most successful season in more than a decade come to a close with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) loss to third-seeded Minnesota in the second round of the 2020-21 NCAA Tournament on Thursday evening at CHI Health Center.
Georgia Tech (14-5) led in every set but couldn’t overcome a .359 hitting percentage and nine blocks by Minnesota (15-2) in the second-round defeat.
Tech’s Mariana Brambilla led all players with 16 kills. Julia Bergmann added 11 kills while Mikaila Dowd led the Yellow Jackets with 10 digs and Erin Moss had a team-high five blocks.
In spite of the defeat, the Jackets put together one of the finest seasons in program history in 2020-21. Despite splitting the season between the fall and spring and seeing the NCAA Championship field reduced from 64 to 48 teams due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Tech earned its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2009 and, with Wednesday’s opening-round win over Lipscomb, claimed the program’s first NCAA Tournament win since 2004. The Jackets were ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association top 25 throughout the entire season.
The future is also quite bright for Tech, as its top nine players in terms of matches and sets played in 2020-21, also have at least two seasons of eligibility remaining, including five players that have been all-Atlantic Coast Conference selections during the course of their careers – Bergmann (three seasons of eligibility remaining), Brambilla (2), Mikaila Dowd (2), Kayla Kaiser (2) and Matti McKissock (2).
