Two weeks after breaking the Tech indoor high jump record in the season opener, senior Jerome Miller set a new historic mark on the first day of competition at the Razorback Invitational Friday in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Stafford, Va. native, who has won three-straight high jump titles to start the season, leaped to the new high jump record in just his first attempt at the 7-04.50 mark. Miller blew away the competition by nearly five inches as the next finisher came in with a mark of 6-08.75. He initially broke the record earlier this season at the Clemson Invitational with a jump of 7-04.25.
It was a good day for all Tech high jumpers, as freshman Bianca Stewart finished second in the women’s event with her own personal-best 5 feet, 6 inches in the later hours of the evening. Junior Tiffany Chavis also hit the 1.68 meter mark, but due to X’s and O’s literally, the Marietta, Ga. native finished in a tie for fourth because of an earlier miss at a lower mark.
Also performing well on the day was sophomore Kayla McKeirnan, opening the meet with the grueling pentathlon in which she pushed to a fifth-place finish. McKeirnan’s strongest portion of the event came as a second-place finish in the 800-meter run and a third-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles, but the field events were too much to push the young competitor to a higher result.
The Invitational continues Saturday, as sophomore Joe Fulton leads things off for Tech with the men’s 3,000 meter at 10 a.m.
