Men's Tennis Open's Dual Season Sunday with Doubleheader

Jan. 25, 2008

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team opens its 2008 dual-match season with a doubleheader at the Bill Moore Tennis Center Sunday, Jan. 27. The Yellow Jackets will host Lipscomb (0-1) at 10 a.m., followed by a match-up against Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m.

Tech will meet both of Sunday’s opponents for the first time in the history of the program. Lipscomb opened its 2007-08 campaign with a loss to Chattanooga Jan. 19, while Gardener-Webb will make its season-debut on the Georgia Tech campus.

“The team is anxious to get started,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “We can only train for so long before we need to get out and play some matches and see where we are. Everybody has trained hard and is ready to get going. We have a very tough schedule as is the case every year and we look forward to getting out to a good start this Sunday.”

Tech returns five players from a squad that received an at-large bid into the 2007 NCAA Tournament. With a roster depleted by injuries, Thorne’s squad finished under .500 but earned a spot in the championship tournament for the eighth time in the last nine seasons. Senior David North battled through injuries to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship singles draw.

The Jackets also welcome five freshmen to the 2008 roster led by Guillermo Gomez, who earned an initial ranking of No. 82 in the country after a tremendous fall season. Joining Gomez are Ryan Smith, Miguel Muguruza, Eliot Potvin and Doug Kenny.

“Everyone on the team deserves to play and will get an opportunity to play and contribute,” Thorne said. “We expect Lipscomb and Gardner-Webb to be ready as well and we look forward to playing against them.”

The Bisons and Bulldogs help kick-start a season full of tough opponents for the Jackets. Tech will face three teams ranked in the top 10 and seven teams in the top 25.

Admission is free. Fans unable to attend the match can follow live stats by visiting Ramblinwreck.com.

Tech continues its dual-match season on with another doubleheader Sunday, Feb. 3 at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The Jackets will face USC Upstate at 10 a.m., followed by Georgia Southern at 2 p.m.
