Men's Tennis Opens Dual Match Season Saturday

Jan. 30, 2004

The Georgia Tech (0-0) men’s tennis team will open its dual-match season at home Saturday hosting Georgia Southern (0-1) at 1 p.m. on the indoor courts of the Bill Moore Tennis Center on the campus of Georgia Tech.

Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets in singles will be seniors Scott Schnugg, Joao Menano, West Nott and Jason Pieters, all of whom will appear in the lineup. In addition, freshman Jose Muguruza, who advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Indoor Championships two weeks ago, will make his debut in a dual match.

In doubles, the tandem of Schnugg and Muguruza, who are ranked No. 27 in the preseason ITA poll, will play at the No. 1 spot while a combination of Menano, Nott, Pieters and Rajevac will be seen at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

“Our team has worked hard since the return of winter break and we are excited about the start of our dual match season,” said head coach Kenny Thorne, who begins his sixth season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets. “We return a number of players who played important roles for us last year and this could be a exciting year for Georgia Tech tennis.”

Following Saturday’s match, the Yellow Jackets will return to action on Feb. 7 when they host a double header against Chattanooga and Mercer.
