The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team heads to Manzanillo, Mexico Jan. 12-14 to compete in the Mexico Classic and begin the 2006 season. The tournament will feature three of the nation’s top teams, including No. 4 Illinois, No. 19 California and the No. 30 Yellow Jackets. The round-robin event will not be counted as dual matches, but individual results will count. Georgia Tech will face each school in “hidden dual match” format, which includes singles and doubles matches each of the days of competition.
“This is a great tournament for us to compete in,” said head coach Kenny Thorne, who begins his eighth season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets. “The level of competition is going to be outstanding which will allow our guys to go against the best competition right away and it also gives us a chance to be outdoors, which is important as we begin our dual match format.”
The Jackets will be led this season by junior Zachary Rath and sophomore Jordan Delass, both of whom posted strong results during the fall campaign. In addition, senior Marko Rajevac and sophomore David North begin the year ranked No. 22 in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
“Our team more than anything just needs matches before we start the season and against this level of competition, we’ll find out in a hurry where we stand,” said Thorne. “I feel like we have our doubles teams set for the season, but our singles lineup could still change and hopefully after this weekend, we’ll have a better idea heading into the dual-match portion of our season.”
