Marcelle Named ACC Outdoor Field Performer of the Year

April 24, 2009

Georgia Tech junior Steve Marcelle was named the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Field Performer of the Year, as determined by a vote of the league’s 12 head coaches Thursday. Marcelle won the outdoor shot put title and finished second in the discus at this year’s ACC Championships in Coral Gables, Fla.

Marcelle, who placed-second in the shot put the previous two years, took the title last Friday with a mark of 60’6.75″. He defeated the field by over four-inches on the day, while earning All-ACC honors for the third-straight year. Marcelle then placed second in the discus throw with a distance of 188’5″. The Green Bay, Wisc. native earned his second All-ACC honor at the meet while shattering his personal-best mark by over eight-inches.

He currently has the 11th-best mark in the nation in the shot put at 61’3.75″, and the 14th-best mark in the discus with his throw last weekend.

The Georgia Tech track & field teams are currently competing at the historic Penn Relays at Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia, Pa.
