ATLANTA – Jeff Kamrath tossed a complete-game three-hitter and Matt Street homered and drove in two runs to lead Virginia (23-21, 8-8 ACC) to a 5-1 win over 10th-ranked Georgia Tech (34-9, 8-7 ACC) on Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Virginia’s win snapped Tech’s 27-game home winning streak which dated back to the 2001 season. The Cavaliers, who had lost 18 straight games in Atlanta, won for the first time at Russ Chandler Stadium since the 1988 season.
Kamrath (6-3), who went the distance for the second time in 12 starts, held Georgia Tech to one run on three hits. He walked four batters and struck out three while allowing just three runners to advance past first base.
Tech starter Kyle Bakker (9-2) took the loss despite a solid effort after allowing three earned runs in eight innings of work.
The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with an unearned run. David Stone led off the game with a walk and then scored on Tech second baseman Eric Patterson’s fielding error after stealing second and third bases. A solo home run from Mark Reynolds, his 11th of the season, made the score 2-0 in the fourth.
Kamrath held the Yellow Jackets scoreless until Tech’s Matt Murton hit a solo home run in the seventh, his fifth of the year, to cut the Virginia lead to 2-1. The Cavs immediately responded in the top of the eighth when Matt Street hit a two run homer, his fourth, to make the score 4-1. Virginia added another unearned run in the top of the ninth to push the lead to 5-1.
Meanwhile the Yellow Jackets could not muster any offense against Kamrath, who retired 15 of the final 20 Tech hitters in the game. The top three hitters in the Tech order were a combined 0-for-12.
