Jose Muguruza To Play in Semifinals of ACC Indoor Championship

Georgia Tech’s Jose Luis Muguruza won two matches and advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Indoor Championships, defeating Brett Ross of Wake Forest, 6-3, 7-5 and third-seeded Matt Cloer of Florida State, 7-6 (1), 6-1, on the second day of competition at the ACC Indoor Championships in Winston-Salem, NC. Muguruza, the sixth seed in the tournament, will now face second-seeded Doug Stewart from Virginia on Sunday.

In the consolation bracket, Yellow Jackets Scott Schnugg and Noah Tyler remained alive and advanced to the quarterfinals on Sunday. Schnugg defeated PJ Petrides of North Carolina, 6-1, 6-1, and then beat Carolina’s Raian Luchici 6-3, 6-2. Schnugg will now face Nick Meythaler from Virginia. Tyler advanced to the quarterfinals with a win over William Noblitt, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 and will now face Virginia’s Burak Ahmed Sunday.

In other matches in the consolation bracket, Jack DePaolo fell to Meythaler, 7-6 (1), 6-3, Marko Rajevac lost to NC State’s Andre Iriarte, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 10-4, Nico Gysi was defeated by NC State’s Ryan Johnson, 0-6, 7-6 (4), 10-6, and Trevor McLeod lost to Virginia’s Chris Gonyer, 3-6, 6-3, 10-4. Also, Zachary Rath and Joao Menano each advanced to the round of 16 in the consolation bracket before losing. Rath fell to Marko Miklo of Virginia, 6-3, 6-3 while Menano lost to Linon Strauss of Wake Forest, 6-2, 7-5.

In doubles action of the main draw, Muguruza and Schnugg fell to Duke’s Rodrigues and Stokke, 9-8 (6) and Menano and Rath were defeated by Carolina’s Metzler and Monroe, 8-5 in the quarterfinals.
