Jones and Laband Named Wendy's Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week

Nov. 15, 2004

ATLANTA–Football special teams standout Djay Jones and volleyball star Lindsey Laband were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, November 15, 2004.

Jones, a freshman from St. Mary’s, Ga., recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown and then blocked another punt in Georgia Tech’s 30-10 win over Connecticut. With Tech leading 7-3 late in the second quarter and UConn punting from its own 22-yard line, Tech’s Ace Eziemefe blocked the punt, and Jones scooped up the ball at the five-yard line and took it to the end zone. Then in the third quarter and the Huskies punting from the 17, Jones broke through and blocked the punt. Tech took over at the UConn 15-yard line, setting up a field goal that extended the Jackets’ lead to 23-3. Jones also had two tackles on kickoff coverage.

Laband, a junior from Monument, Colo., helped the Jackets to a perfect 16-0 record in ACC play for the first time in school history. Laband averaged 16.15 assists per game and 3.67 digs per game in wins over Maryland and Virginia. The junior setter currently leads the nation in assists per game with 15.14 per game.
