Georgia Tech is coming off two home wins, most recently defeating Kennesaw State on Sunday. Led by a trio of Yellow Jackets in double figures, the Jackets collected a 65-39 decision to move to 2-0 on the season. Fifth-year transfer Cameron Swartz had led the Jackets offensively in both early games. The Marietta, Ga., native notched 19 points in the season-opener against Georgia State and followed that performance with 14 points against Kennesaw State. Sophomore transfer, Kayla Blackshear has earned the start in both games to start the season, and leads Tech on the boards, collecting 7.5 rebounds per game.
Auburn comes into Wednesday’s meeting also with a 2-0 record after picking up wins over Sam Houston and South Alabama to start the season. In the midst of a four-game homestand to open the season, the Tigers are being led offensively by Aicha Coulibaly who is averaging 21.5 points per game and is the SEC’s second-leading scorer. Coulibaly is also leading Auburn on the glass, pulling down 7.5 rebounds per game.
Wednesday will a bit of a homecoming for Georgia Tech head coach Nell Fortner who served as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn from 2004-12. Also returning to familiar territory is GT associate head coach Blanche Alverson who played at Auburn under Fortner from 2009-13.
Georgia Tech and Auburn are meeting for the fifth time in program history on the hardwood. Georgia Tech seeks its first-ever win over the Tigers after Auburn captured a narrow 59-51 decision last season in Atlanta. Wednesday’s meeting in Auburn marks the first between the schools since 1975-76.
Competitive Drive Initiative
In a unified endeavor, Georgia Tech, the Georgia Tech Foundation, Georgia Tech athletics and the Alexander-Tharpe Fund have come together to accelerate funding for student-athlete scholarships with the launch of the Competitive Drive Initiative. The initiative kicks off with the Accelerate GT Match Program, where any new gift to the A-T Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund made through Dec. 31 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Georgia Tech Foundation, up to $2.5 million. Should Accelerate GT reach its $2.5 million fundraising goal, the matching gift would result in a $5 million impact for Georgia Tech athletics.
