ATLANTA – In their season opener, the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams split in the Tri-Meet with Western Kentucky and Florida Atlantic Saturday. Both teams defeated FAU in dominating fashion as the men earned a 195-97 victory while the women won, 214-74. The dual meet against WKU was a shootout for both teams as the men dropped a 151-149 decision while the women fell 152.5-147.5.

“I am happy that we got our season started, at home and in a competitive fashion,” said Head Coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “We saw some really good things today out of the athletes and saw some things that we have to work for the future meets this season.”

On the men’s swimming side of things, the sprit group dominated taking the top-three spots in the 50-Free as Nigel Plummer, Garrett Robberson and Sully Lynch went 1-2-3 with times of 20.78, 20.87 and 21.32 respectively. Robberson also placed in the top-3 in the 100-Free with a time of 46.64 coming in second followed by Travis Wagner in third with a time of 46.82.

Zach Tillman, who sat out the 2009-10 season, began his junior year on the right foot with a couple of come-from-behind finishes earning second place by a mere .01 seconds in the 500-Free and taking first after taking the lead over in lap 36 in the 1,000-Free.

Tech fans also saw the debut of Anton Lagerqvist, as the freshman from Sweden took home his first ever collegiate victory in the 200-Breast with a time of 2:04.15. Lagerqvist also finished second in the 100-Breast falling just .42 seconds shy of his second victory of the day to pace Georgia Tech athletes.

The women’s swimmers were headed by Sarah Broadley who kept busy on the day placing in each of the events that she competed in. Broadley took first in the 100-Free (51.69), 200-Free (1:51.22) and was a part of the 200-Free Relay that came in first place in a time of1:35.15. She also earned a second place showing in the 500-Free (5:08.83) falling short of teammate Taylor Sostarecz who dominated with a time of 5:02.72.

Sostarescz also had a big day for the Jackets as she swept the distance races also earning a first place victory in the 1,000-Free with a time of 10:21.43.

In a less than ideal situation, the Tech divers also did well on the day taking their competition to the diving well at Emory while the Tech diving well still undergoes renovation.

Freshman Ashley Hardy made her Tech debut in an incredible fashion sweeping both the one and three-meter dives with scores of 272.20 and 260.00. Brandon Makinson and Chris Khosravi went 1-2 in both the men’s one and three-meter dives. Makinson earned the victories with scores of 323.70 and 381.05 while Khosravi finished with scores of 307.05 and 332.25.

“With Ashley being a freshman, for her to win both is definitely starting off on the right foot,” said diving coach John Ames. “She has so much raw talent that we spend the practices trying to train her with technique and for her to put that together during this meet is great an shows a lot of promise for the future.”

“Brandon was nervous going into this meet, not about placing high, but wanting to do his best and he did just that. I am proud of how both of the guys competed for their first event of the season.”

The swimming and diving squads return to action in a mid-week “Rival Meet” when they take on Georgia and Emory on Wednesday, November 3 at 5 p.m.
