Atlanta – Two Yellow Jackets gave career performances Thursday to lead their squad to a lopsided victory over Winston-Salem State, 75-43, at the Alexander Memorial Coliseum to conclude a four-game home stand.
Daphne Mitchell, a junior forward from Atlanta, saw her career scoring high nearly double Thursday, scoring a team-best 19 points, surpassing her previous best 10 points earned in the Dec. 29 win over Alcorn State. It was Mitchell’s back-to-back buckets that gave Tech a 12-point lead over the Lady Rams with under four minutes to play in the first, which was the largest lead of the half. Mitchell missed only three shots from the field, was perfect from the line and added four rebounds and a block. This is the first time in her career she has led the team in scoring.
Jacqua Williams, who started in her seventh straight game of the season Thursday, came away tying a career-best with six steals, four of which came in the first half. Williams was fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference and 47th in the nation in steals coming into Thursday’s game, and has stolen the ball 41 times this season.
The Jackets, who led 33-21 at the break, came out firing in the second half making ten of their first 15 field goal attempts. The Jackets stayed up at least 25 points for the remainder of the game and finished with their fifth 30-point win of the season.
Tech’s leading scorer on the season, Stephanie Higgs added 18 points and Chioma Nnamaka finished with 13 points and five rebounds.
Janie Mitchell was injured in the game when, eight minutes into the game, she took a nasty spill. The junior co-captain drove the lane for a lay up and collided with a Winston-Salem defender. After a few moments in obvious pain, Mitchell was helped off the court by a Tech trainer and assistant coach. Mitchell, who is Tech’s leading rebounder and second-best scorer, suffered a sprain in her left knee and did not return to the game. She is probable for Sunday’s game.
Georgia Tech (9-5) returns to the court Sunday in Clemson, S.C. to take on the Tigers (8-7) at 2 p.m. in Littlejohn Coliseum for their second ACC test of the season.
