Jackets Roll on Day Two of Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The fourth-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team won a total of nine matches–seven singles and two doubles–on day two of competition in the Michigan Invitational, which is being contested at the University of Michigan this weekend. All together, the Jackets have won 13 of 16 singles and five of eight doubles matches in the first two days of competition.

The Jackets began the day facing LSU in singles action, taking all five matches from the Tigers and a pair against Michigan players. No. 7 Kristi Miller dispatched of Mykala Hedbert, 6-2, 6-1, while No. 25 Tarryn Rudman easily defeated Lauren Seaman, 6-1, 6-0. No. 35 Kelly Anderson and No. 71 Lyndsay Shosho also pulled out straight-set victories, as Anderson dropped Tiffany Tucker, 6-2, 6-3, and Shosho won 6-1, 6-1, over Daysi Espinal. Alison Silverio pulled out a third-set victory against the Tigers’ Anastasiya Dubova, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Rounding out the singles victors for the Yellow Jackets were sophomore Whitney McCray, who was a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 winner over Chisako Sugiyama of Michigan, and rookie Christy Striplin, who engineered a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory against the Wolverine’s Lindsey Howard.

Tech then took two of four doubles matches Saturday afternoon against doubles teams from California. Miller and Shosho, ranked 26th in the nation, downed Cal’s seventh-ranked tandem of Suzie Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor, 8-3, while Rudman and Silverio stopped the Bears’ Marion Ravelojaona and Claire Ilcinkas, 8-3.

Overall, Miller, Rudman, Shosho and Silverio are 2-0 in singles and doubles in the tournament, Anderson is 3-0 in singles and 0-2 in doubles, McCray is 2-0 in singles and 0-2 in doubles, Striplin is 1-1 in singles and doubles and Anson is 0-2 in singles and 1-1 in doubles.

The Jackets will conclude play in the Michigan Invitational Sunday, playing the LSU Tigers in doubles at 9:30 a.m. and competing against Michigan in singles at 2 p.m.
