COLUMBIA, S.C. – On the opening day of the Carolina Kickoff, hosted by South Carolina, No. 12 Georgia Tech women’s tennis collected seven victories between singles and doubles. One round of singles was held followed by two rounds of doubles action.

Tech opened the morning with a round of singles play with Mahak Jain, Rosie Garcia Gross, Monika Dedaj, Kate Sharabura and Gia Cohen all collecting straight-set victories against South Carolina. Jain took the first set over Allie Gretowski, 6-4, but trailed 5-1 in the second set against the Gamecock before winning the next six games to erase her deficit and capture the match in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

Competing against Elise Mills, Garcia Gross collected the opening set, 6-2, and came out with a 4-3 lead in the second. The junior solidified the victory with a 6-3 second set. Also victorious in singles action, Dedaj trailed Lindsay Tulenko, 5-3, in the opening set, but rallied to win the next four games to claim the early match advantage with a 7-5 first set win. Dedaj carried momentum into the second set, cruising to a 6-2 victory to seal the match.

Sharabura continued her strong freshman season on Friday, winning in straight sets over Kendall Couch. The Jacket grabbed the opener, 6-3, and got down an early break in the second set before rallying for a 6-4 victory. Rounding out singles play for the Jackets, Cohen cruised in her match against Chloe Narboni, pocketing the win, 6-2, 6-2.

Three Tech doubles teams took the court on Friday with Carol Lee and Sharabura going undefeated in a pair of matches. The doubles tandem faced South Carolina’s Sarah Hamner and Misa Malkin to open the morning and cruised to a 6-3 decision. They returned to action against Auburn’s Ariana Arsenault and Selin Ovunc, topping the Tigers, 6-3.

With inclement weather approaching the area over the weekend, the tournament will conclude on Saturday with Georgia Tech facing Wake Forest. The teams will each play one round of singles and one round of doubles with an approximate first serve slated for 12:30 p.m.
