Jackets in the Community

Jan. 14, 2008

ATLANTA – Members of Georgia Tech’s baseball and volleyball teams, as well as a couple of Yellow Jacket cheerleaders, spent all day Saturday working at a local Habitat for Humanity project in South Atlanta. The community service project was the first of the semester for the Yellow Jacket student-athletes, who returned to class just five days earlier, but one they had been looking forward to since the fall.

“Ever since we’d worked on the Team BUZZ project (which placed Tech’s student athletes in a forest preserve), we had been looking for a project that was more hands-on, something that we could see would benefit more people for a longer period of time,” Jason Haniger, junior catcher and baseball representative for Georgia Tech’s Student-Athlete Advisory Board, said.

The student-athletes spent much of the day painting the inside of the house, but also caulked, cut and sawed boards, and did touch-up work on the outside of the house.

The Yellow Jackets will next return to the community this weekend when they assist in the State of Georgia Special Olympic Games, which will take place in Marietta Jan. 18-20.
