ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will host the Tulsa Hurricane in the first of three games over a five-day span this Sunday. The game will be played at Alexander Memorial Coliseum at 4 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Georgia Tech ISP Sports Radio Network, 91.1 FM in Atlanta, and online at www.wrek.org. Livestats for all three games this week will be available at www.ramblinwreck.com.
Tech will be playing its first game in a week after taking a break for final exams.
“We are looking forward to getting back on the court and playing after our week off for finals,” said Georgia Tech head coach MaChelle Joseph. “When we set up this schedule, we knew that it was going to be a challenge for our team to play three games in five days, especially against the competition that we’re going to be facing.”
The Jackets (6-1) and Hurricane (6-1) each enter the game with one loss on the season and will be meeting for the second time in history. The Hurricane won last year’s meeting, the first of the series, by a score of 55-47 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Tulsa and were paced by All-America candidate Jillian Robbins, who has returned for her senior season (2005-06) and is averaging 19.6 points and 14.4 rebounds per game.
“Our players and coaches are looking forward to this game and the rematch with Tulsa because we felt like we let one slip away from us out there,” said Joseph.
Tech is led by junior Stephanie Higgs, averaging 13.1 points per game, and a pair of sophomores, Chioma Nnamaka and Janie Mitchell, with 10.9 and 10.7 points per game, respectively, while Mitchell also leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per game.
“There is no doubt that all 16 players in our program understand how important it would be to avenge a loss (last year against Tulsa) and protect our home court this weekend,” Joseph added.
Following Sunday’s game, the Jackets will host Longwood Tuesday night at 7 p.m. and Troy University Thursday at 12 noon before breaking for the Christmas holiday.
” is going to be a challenge for our team, but I like our approach and maturity level, and I think that it’s going to be a good challenge for us,” said Joseph. “It’s very similar to ACC Tournament and postseason situations, so I look forward to seeing how are team responds.”
All three games will be broadcast on the Georgia Tech ISP Sports Radio Network.
