Jackets Host Miami, Georgia State in Back-to-Back Matches

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis returns to the Ken Byers Tennis Complex when it hosts Miami and Georgia State on Friday-Saturday, March 2-3.

The Yellow Jackets (3-7, 0-1 ACC) take on their second ACC opponent of the season against a 6-2 Hurricanes squad that is on a five-match winning streak, but has yet to play league match. Its lone losses have come to then-No. 14 Mississippi State and then-No. 22 Tulane. Miami is led in singles by Niclas Genovese (6-1), Bojan Jankulovski (6-2) and Christian Langmo (5-2), while Dane Dunlap and Langmo lead all doubles teams with a 7-1 duals record.

Georgia State (7-6, 1-0 Sun Belt) enter this weekend on a three-match winning streak, having taking wins from North Florida, Charlotte and South Alabama – their first conference opponent. The Panthers are led in singles by Sebastian Acuna, who is 6-1 in dual matches this season, while Kevin Huynh is 6-3 overall. None of GSU’s doubles teams are above .500 on the year, however Acuna and Andrei Duarte are 4-4, holding steady at 4-2 at the 3 position.

Tech is coming off a tough setback to No. 24 Texas on Feb. 25. The Jackets’ lone wins in the 5-2 defeat, were the doubles point and senior Elijah Melendez, who took No. 43 Telles to a 10-point tiebreak in the third, winning 10-6 for his second-straight victory.

En route to an ACC Doubles Team of the Week honor, the duo of Carlos Divar and Michael Kay (currently ranked No. 45) downed the third-ranked team in the country, Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles, 7-5 in the 6-all tiebreak. The victory is the second for Divar and Kay over a nationally ranked opponent. The two improved to 11-4 on the year and 7-2 in dual matches.

The men’s team overall has faced four nationally ranked opponents in its last six games.

First serve against Miami is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on March 2, with the Georgia State match slated to begin at 2 p.m. on March 3.
